The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:
Tsotsi by Athol Fugard
This is a powerful, turbulent book dealing with life across the tracks, in Sophiatown. ‘Tsotsi’ is a record of a lost period in the South African urban happening: most of the black writers of the Sophiatown renaissance of the fifties and early sixties were banned or exiled by 1980, when the book was published, and were unavailable to their readers back home. Yet this was a golden age which enriched both black and white experience.
‘Tsotsi’ was adapted into a movie which won the American Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006.
