“We pride ourselves on providing safe, high-quality food that supports the academic experience of students,” says UPWAY Customer Service Champion Pinky Munalisi, who tells us about what makes her tick.
What do you do on a daily basis?
I am an operations manager in food services in the Department of Residence Affairs and Accommodation. My tasks include planning, organising and liaising with food service managers with regard to menu planning, food safety, finance approvals, staff training and human resources matters for the division.
What do you enjoy about your job?
My role is a crucial one. I have to make decisions about the kind of service that we provide students. We pride ourselves on providing safe, high-quality food that supports the academic experience of students. We live up to our motto – “Legae gae” – which means “home away from home”: serving students meals that make them feel at home, nourish and enrich them, and give them a sense of familiarity.
What do you enjoy least about your job?
Being a manager means I get to make decisions that impact staff, but sometimes they may feel that it is not in their best interests. However, a problem and solution-based approach is more effective than problems and no solutions. Another thing I enjoy the least is when there are a lot of complaints from students because that means there is something that is not being done right.
Which UP pillar do you resonate with?
Innovate: It is important for our department to be creative, keep up with the latest trends and technology. We are continuously researching and benchmarking with other universities in order to learn from them so that we can be of better service to students.
What do you consider your most significant accomplishment in your career so far?
I started working as a supervisor in 2008, and in 2012, I was promoted to assistant manager. I have always known that I would like to assume a managerial position, and the promotion in 2022, which is my current position, came earlier than anticipated. Although I wanted it, I just did not know it would be this soon, but here I am now, showing up because God has bestowed this on me.
What would you like to improve in your department?
I would like a united front between management and staff. It is important for staff to feel appreciated and heard. Staff morale is a big factor and as a department, we are investing in that.
What do you do in your free time?
I love baking and trying out new recipes, spending time with family and friends as well as going to the gym.
Is there anything that you would like to impart to the UP community?
Be yourself, never change who you are for anyone, and live your life like it’s your last day.
