Water-saving tips

With the implementation of Stage 2 water restrictions, UP would like to appeal to all staff and students to use water sparingly to avoid shortages.

The University of Pretoria (UP) is appealing to staff and students to comply with water restriction regulations in an effort to reduce consumption.

Rand Water implemented Stage 2 water restrictions in October in the Cities of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni metros due to a significant increase in water consumption over the past two weeks.

According to Rand Water, its reservoir storage capacity has decreased from 52% to 38%. The restrictions have been put in place to ensure that 60% of their overall reservoir storage capacity is restored.

Residents of Tshwane are urged to reduce their water consumption and continue to use water sparingly in order to avoid reservoirs running dry. This will cause water shortages and subsequent interruptions in the water supply.

You can help save water by doing the following:

  1. Ensuring taps are closed before you leave the restroom or kitchen
  2. Dispose of tissues and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet
  3. Take short showers instead of baths
  4. Avoid letting the water run while brushing your teeth, washing your face or shaving
  5. Wait until you have a full load before using the dishwasher or washing machine
  6. Never pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it (such as for gardening purposes)
