The Fundraising Office would like to thank all the staff members who supported the University in funding its various projects and student bursaries over the past year. UP staff helped raise a combined R965 595 towards student bursaries in 2021/21. The Cheryl de la Rey Scholarship Fund/Tuks Scholarship General Fund received R627 844, while R337 751 was donated to the Solidarity Fund. These funds were donated by current staff members, alumni and other external stakeholders. Well done, UP community!
“The Fundraising Office has been humbled by the generosity of the UP community – from current staff, alumni and other external stakeholders – who have given despite the rough economic climate. We are really proud of all our donors. Thank you!” said Josiah Mavundla, UP Fundraising and Database Senior Manager.
It is a well-known fact that the University of Pretoria (UP) is home to some of the most brilliant minds, who are passionate about teaching and are always ready to share their knowledge and transfer their skills to students. These minds are supported by an enabling teaching and learning environment, which has been able to seamlessly adapt to the new normal – through the support of professionals who are working tirelessly to ensure that the institution never falters. New systems and procedures have been put in place to ensure that students do not miss out on their academic activities.
But what happens when deserving students are unable to study due to financial constraints? The very same people of UP have proven their passion for educating the nation by donating some of their hard-earned money back to the University, to ensure that no student is left behind. These people, who range from current staff members and alumni to big corporates and small companies, are passionate about the success of the University, and are ploughing back into academia to further strengthen the standard of learning and teaching. Despite the pandemic, which placed new financial and emotional demands on everyone, donors continued to donate and give more students a chance at tertiary education.
Their donations, coupled with donations from alumni and other external donors, continued to make a difference in the lives of ordinary students who wouldn’t have had the financial muscle to fund their studies. They are kind and generous people who give without expecting much. They do not earn millions, but they believe in sharing the little that they have to ensure that UP students do not miss out on their academics, just because they cannot afford it. Thank you UP community, you have really shown that #UPCares.
To show our gratitude, our Vice-Chancellor and Principal will be hosting a virtual event to personally thank all the donors. Please click here to register.
