The University of Pretoria’s (UP) 2019 Sustainable Development Report shows our progress toward integrating sustainability into all parts of our institution. It is the first such report produced by UP and involved extensive engagement and co-design with thought leaders across the University. The report is an important part of our quest to strengthen collaboration and partnerships.
A 4.2% reduction in energy purchased in 2019, a 10.44% decrease in carbon emission intensity per person from 2016, and 1 800 new trees planted since 2014 are just some of the gains that UP has made in improving operational sustainability performance.
This report goes beyond the traditional focus on green campuses, and is a clear reflection of the University’s transdisciplinarity approach – of how it works together across boundaries in support of South Africa’s National Development Plan, Agenda 2063 and the SDGs.
