UP claims fifth position in the 2026 QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa

The University of Pretoria (UP) has been ranked number five overall in Sub-Saharan Africa in the inaugural 2026 QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa, a milestone that underscores the University’s growing regional and global influence. The newly launched ranking spotlights universities across Eastern, Western, middle and Southern Africa, in line with the United Nations (UN) geoscheme, and evaluates institutional performance through a multidimensional framework designed to reflect the realities, strengths and development priorities of the region.

In total, 69 universities across Africa were ranked, including 14 institutions from South Africa. UP’s top-five regional placement confirms its position as one of the continent’s leading research-intensive universities and a key contributor to Africa’s socio-economic and sustainable development agenda.

Outstanding performance across strategic indicators

The rankings are based on five performance categories, each capturing a crucial dimension of contemporary university impact: Research and Discovery (40%), Employability and Outcomes (20%), Learning Experience (5%), Global Engagement (20%), and Sustainability (15%). Within this framework, UP demonstrated exceptional strength across several high-impact indicators, with its top five indicators by score being Employer Reputation, Sustainability, Web Impact, International Research Network, and Academic Reputation. Notably, UP was ranked second for Employer Reputation, third for International Research Network and Sustainability, and fourth for Academic Reputation and Web Impact.

“The inaugural QS Sub-Saharan Africa rankings are both an affirmation and a responsibility,” said Professor Francis Petersen, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UP. “Performing strongly across indicators such as employer reputation, sustainability and international research collaboration reflects the collective efforts of our staff, students, alumni and partners.”

What these indicators mean for UP

  • Employer Reputation: This indicator reflects how employers perceive the quality, relevance and preparedness of a university’s graduates. UP’s second-place ranking signals strong employer confidence in the University’s graduates, highlighting industry-aligned curricula, strong professional and work-integrated learning pathways, and graduates equipped with future-ready skills.
  • Sustainability measures how universities integrate environmental stewardship, social responsibility and governance into their core missions. UP’s third-place ranking in the region reflects embedded sustainability research and teaching, institutional commitments to climate resilience and social justice, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Web Impact assesses a university’s digital presence, visibility and the reach of its research and intellectual outputs online. UP’s fourth-place ranking demonstrates strong global discoverability of UP research, effective digital dissemination of knowledge and growing international engagement through digital platforms. This reinforces UP’s role as a knowledge hub for Africa, extending its influence well beyond physical campus boundaries.
  • International Research Network: This indicator measures the breadth and depth of international research collaborations. UP’s third-place ranking highlights extensive global research partnerships, cross-border, transdisciplinary collaboration and contribution to global knowledge production with African relevance.
  • Academic Reputation reflects how scholars worldwide perceive the quality and impact of a university’s research and teaching. UP’s fourth-place regional ranking confirms strong international standing among academic peers, consistent research excellence across disciplines and a trusted academic brand within and beyond Africa.

“These results align closely with our ThriveUP 2038 strategy, which positions the University of Pretoria as a future-focused, socially responsive institution that advances knowledge for the public good,” Prof Petersen said. “Our strong employer reputation speaks to the relevance of our graduates, while our sustainability and research network rankings reflect our commitment to addressing Africa’s most pressing challenges through collaboration and innovation. As we look ahead, this recognition motivates us to deepen our impact, strengthen our partnerships across the continent and globally, and continue shaping a university that not only competes internationally but contributes meaningfully to Africa’s development and the world.”
