Balancing hard work and purpose: Seshan Naidoo begins his UP journey
Seshan Naidoo, a top achiever from St Dunstan’s College in Benoni, Gauteng, is set to start his studies at the University of Pretoria (UP) this year after earning eight distinctions in his 2025 matric exams.
“I believe that hard work is imperative, but it is also important not to lose your personal values and beliefs in search of success,” he says. “I am grateful to have been in such a welcoming environment that encouraged me to succeed.”
That sense of support extended beyond the classroom. “All the late nights studying together were key to my growth. Despite how isolated or vulnerable we may have felt, we were all going through the same journey. Working together and communicating made the path to success far more achievable than I initially believed.”
One subject that challenged him was English. “I never really developed a passion for it, and reading a book was always daunting. Nevertheless, I found what worked for me and committed to putting in the work to achieve the best result I believed was attainable.”
Outside of academia, staying active and connected helped him remain grounded. “I wouldn’t say I have a particular hobby, but staying active and connecting with friends keeps me grounded, whether that means time at the gym, playing soccer or simply having meaningful conversations,” he says.
His time at St Dunstan’s College left a lasting impact. “The school provided a strong foundation for my success. I met some of the best friends I could have asked for and received support from teachers who were always there to help. The lessons I learned at St Dunstan’s will equip me for the rest of my life, not just academically, but also in living a life of purpose and meaning.”
Choosing UP, he says, felt instinctive. “Pretoria just called my name,” he says. “I am most excited to meet new people and take this next step in my life.”
As he prepares for his first year, Naidoo is focused on giving his best while maintaining balance. “I hope to make myself and my family proud, which requires discipline,” he says. “I also hope to use the tools the university provides to succeed so that I can give back to my community and my family, whose hard work and sacrifices have helped me get to this point.”
