Sonja Cruywagen completed her BA (Ed) Mus degree, BMus (Hons) and MMus (Music education) (cum laude) at the University of Pretoria. She continued her postgraduate studies at NWU and completed her PhD in Music in 2015. Cruywagen was a role player in the structuring and developing of provincial school syllabi and music programmes of various small art colleges. As head of the music departments at these art colleges she focused on streamlining curricula to offer the best possible education in preparing students' music careers. She also taught music at Damelin South Africa (Sound Engineering).
Dr Cruywagen enjoys creating educational material for use in music education and her research interests include hybrid teaching and learning in music education, constructing teaching strategies for musical understanding formed through diverse lived musical experiences and learning through a holistic education approach that develop the student into a well-rounded person.
She is currently a Music Education and History of Music (popular music) lecturer at UP.
