Dr Dorette Vermeulen completed her BMus degree at the University of Stellenbosch, continuing her postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria where she obtained her BMus (Hons) (cum laude), MMus (cum laude) and DMus degrees. Her focal area of research is community music involvement projects which form an integral part of tertiary and post-graduate music education programmes in the Department of Music at the University of Pretoria. As a lecturer and post-graduate supervisor for students specialising in music education, she draws on her research to implement innovative practices. Music as a performance-based art requires unique and advanced artistic skills to be developed in both learners and music teachers, and the challenges as well as benefits and values of these skills are being investigated. She has read papers at national and international conferences, focusing on challenges of music education as part of an integrated curriculum in South Africa.
