Tuks Mining Society (TMS)

The TMS sub-house is a student organisation that exists to benefit UP Mining Engineering students. It is run by students elected to the Executive Committee and provides a platform for networking and socialisation among other students and staff of the Department outside the lecture halls and campus. The organisation’s mission is to support the Department’s students on a holistic level, and it ensures that students have a voice in the broader university setting.

Chairperson 2021: John Phetla

The TMS has initiated a mentorship programme where junior students are assigned to senior students to assist them with academic issues and provide guidance based on personal experience. The organisation also hosts events, which include departmental socials, career events, debates and educational events where guest speakers share their industry experience.

In addition, the TMS is involved in community development projects. Through this initiative, it creates an environment where all mining students can interact with communities with different needs in an attempt to offer assistance and uplift each other. In the process, the organisation hopes to instil a spirit of togetherness in the early stages of the students’ careers.
