Voices of a bold generation united in colour and rooted in denim

On 30 June 2025, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Pretoria came together to celebrate Youth Month in true African style through purpose, pride, and powerful stories. Under the theme “United in Colour, Rooted in Denim”, the event embodied the vibrant diversity, resilience, and shared identity of African youth committed to transforming the continent.

The day-long training, hosted in partnership with the Elevate Africa Academy, served as a dynamic platform to sharpen leadership, storytelling, and public speaking skills. More than just a training session, it was a celebration of young leaders-in-training. Scholars deeply rooted in their heritage, yet boldly stepping into global roles as change-makers.

The program kicked off with team introductions and an energising icebreaker that set the tone for an immersive day of learning and collaboration. Scholars were then taken through Chapter 1: Confidence, a session led by Pona, that combined powerful poetry with a thought-provoking exploration of systemic barriers and personal silence. Through interactive activities, Scholars unpacked their inner voice and boldly stepped into it.

In Chapter 2: Articulation, Storytelling, and Academic Presentations, led by Elma, Scholars honed their storytelling techniques, learning how to command attention whether speaking on politics, advertising, or academic platforms. This was followed by a vibrant Chapter 3 on body language and voice projection, skills essential for any impactful leader navigating the global stage.

The highlight of the day was the ultimate debate, where Scholars tackled topics central to Africa’s future from the regulation of social media and the relevance of feminism in African societies to whether democracy truly works on the continent. The spirited debates were a testament to the intellectual strength and nuanced perspectives of young Africans determined to shape inclusive narratives.

Every moment of the program reminded us of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program's mission: to nurture a generation of ethical, entrepreneurial, and transformative leaders who will lead Africa toward inclusive and sustainable growth. The Scholars’ stories rooted in denim as a symbol of shared identity, and united in colour to reflect our diversity demonstrated the bold future we are building together.

As we handed out certificates, shared laughter, and danced to our victory songs, we celebrated more than Youth Month we celebrated a movement. A generation unafraid to speak, to challenge, and to elevate Africa.
