The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme Class of 2026 Orientation

From 18 to 23 January, undergraduate and postgraduate Scholars gathered in Pretoria for a carefully designed Orientation Programme that went beyond logistics and administration, focusing instead on belonging, growth, and purpose.

January 2026 marked the beginning of an exciting and transformative journey for a new cohort of Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Pretoria. From 18 to 23 January, undergraduate and postgraduate Scholars gathered in Pretoria for a carefully designed Orientation Programme that went beyond logistics and administration, focusing instead on belonging, growth, and purpose.

The orientation was the first official touchpoint between Scholars, the University, and the wider Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme community. It was intentionally structured to create a supportive environment where Scholars could connect with one another, understand what was expected of them academically and personally, and begin to see themselves as part of a global network of leaders committed to positive social change.

The programme started on Sunday, 18 January, with Scholars arriving at The Capital, Menlyn Maine. From the moment of arrival, the emphasis was on community-building and care. Scholars received their orientation packs and programme T-shirts before engaging in meet-and-greet sessions with programme staff and Scholars’ representatives. Icebreakers and interactive discussions helped ease the transition into university life, while a panel on settling in Pretoria offered practical guidance on cultural adjustment, budgeting, dress code, conduct, and navigating a new city.

Monday, 19 January shifted the focus to academic readiness and institutional integration. Scholars were formally welcomed by University of Pretoria leadership and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme team, setting a tone of excellence and shared responsibility. An alumnus talk offered inspiration grounded in lived experience, reminding Scholars of what was possible through commitment and perseverance. Throughout the day, Scholars engaged in sessions on academic expectations, teaching styles, academic integrity, and available support resources. Practical components such as registration support, banking processes, laptop handovers, IT onboarding, and an introduction to the Baobab Platform ensured that Scholars were fully equipped for the academic year ahead.

On Tuesday, 20 January, the orientation turned its attention to holistic development and wellbeing. Scholars engaged in in-depth discussions around the programme handbook and affirmed their commitment through the Scholars’ Pledge. Interactive sessions explored what guarantees student success, campus safety and security, healthcare support, and transformation policies at the University of Pretoria. These conversations were designed to empower Scholars with knowledge, confidence, and a clear understanding of their rights and responsibilities within the university community.

Orientation extended beyond the initial three days, recognising that successful transitions require time, reflection, and continued support. From 21 to 23 January, Scholars participated in a Cultural Immersion Programme that promoted cross-cultural understanding, inclusion, and global citizenship. This was followed by the Solid Minds Programme, which placed mental health, resilience, and wellbeing at the centre of the student experience. Residence orientation, international student orientation, Welcome Day, and first-year orientation activities further supported Scholars as they settled into university life. Lectures officially commenced on 9 February 2026.

More than an introduction, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme Orientation laid a strong foundation for the years ahead. It reflected the programme’s commitment to developing ethical leaders, critical thinkers, and engaged citizens who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the continent. As the Class of 2026 embarked on this new chapter, they did so supported, prepared, and connected ready to thrive at the University of Pretoria and beyond.
