Virtual exchange between the students from the University of Konstanz and youth in Mamelodi

A three-week virtual exchange recently concluded between the University of Konstanz and participants from Mamelodi.

The intersection of digital innovation and social responsibility took centre stage during the virtual exchange between students from the University of Konstanz and the youth of Mamelodi. Over the course of three dedicated Friday sessions, participants delved into the "double-edged sword" of social media—a tool that has become both a potent catalyst for economic growth and a profound challenge to mental well-being. This collaborative initiative, which bridges the gap between European academic perspectives and the raw, lived experiences of South African youth, focused intensely on the dual nature of the digital landscape. The sessions were organised by Dr Martina Jordaan from the Mamelodi campus and Dr Manuela Ulrich from the University of Konstanz. The exchange transformed from a simple dialogue into a powerful cross-continental lab, where participants jointly explored how to harness technological connectivity for social upliftment while building psychological resilience against its more predatory influences.
