Ace prosecutor 'gives evidence'

Posted on April 11, 2011

As academic HK, I invited this celebrated prosecutor to lecture on certain aspects of the students' curriculum.

With more than 35 years experience in the field, Adv van Zyl SC was a most valuable source of knowledge from whom every law student could learn. The students also had the opportunity to receive greater insight to some of the cases he was involved in, the most recent being the Judge Motata case.

Adv van Zyl SC shared some of the “behind the scenes” moments and the problems that he faced in proving cases. It was refreshing being taught by such professional lawyer. Not only did he share his is wisdom in a practical and humorous manner, but he also connected with the students, giving the profession that “human element”, which is so often lacking in the field. The lectures were truly enjoyable and an unforgettable experience.

The Lecturer on Law of Evidence, Prof Annette van der Merwe, informed Law House that she was inundated with positive feedback from the students and that she would definitely like to invite Adv van Zyl SC again.

Students can only learn so much from text books and thus it is essential that we use every opportunity to gain some practical insight to our various fields of study.

Law House is grateful towards Adv van Zyl SC for his time and effort and taking an interest in Law House. It is great to see that professionals in our field are willing to put back into the community in such a selfless way.
