DHHS ventures to Adventure Tourism Summit

Posted on June 20, 2024

Prof Karen Harris, Head of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies (DHHS), and fellow lecturer CR Botha ventured out to KwaZulu-Natal where they presented a paper and workshop at the 2nd South African Adventure Tourism Summit in June 2024. As principal investigator and senior researcher on one of the many National Department of Tourism research projects the DHHS has undertaken over the past decade and a half, they presented their recent research about tourist guiding at a local South African level. The paper entitled: Adventure guiding – 3 possible scenarios” presented three options that could be adopted to reconceive, reconfigure and reconsider the sector.

The summit was attended by a range of adventure tourist guides, adventure practitioners, as well as entrepreneurs, legal advisors and tour operators from across South Africa representing a key component of the southern African tourism industry. In their presentation, Harris and Botha pointed to the importance of the adventure tourism sector and how it was an “untapped gem” in terms of its potential in the broader South African tourism fraternity. The workshop they facilitated engaged with the representatives and professionals in the adventure tourism sector and produced interesting findings and debates. It also had the added advantage of allowing for networking and engagement across the very diverse and dynamic adventure tourism sector.
