UP Campus Tours celebrates Mandela Day

Posted on July 19, 2019

“Positive change was the gift left to all of us by Nelson Mandela, but it can only become a living legacy if we take up his challenge.”

On Thursday, 18 July 2019, UP Campus Tours wished the UP community a happy Mandela Day.

2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the Mandela Day initiative since its launch in 2009. On Mandela Day a global community takes action against poverty by contributing 67 minutes of community service, representing the 67 years Mandela fought to make South Africa a better place.

University of Pretoria Campus Tours (more commonly known as UP Campus Tours) is an organisation run by the honours students of the Heritage and Cultural Tourism course, under the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, initiated 16 years ago by Prof Karen Harris.

As part of the Mandela day initiative the honour students, along with Prof Harris and her colleague Ms Herselman, spent 67 minutes picking up litter on the fringes of the Hatfield Campus.

Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact.

This initiative that was taken on by the UP Campus Tours group was a small action that transformed the outside university environment so that the university community has a clean and safe environment to live in.

We hope our one small deed will inspire others to take on the 67 minute challenge in the future.
