Project Management Group

Background

Project Management (PM) as an academic engineering discipline has a long history at the University of Pretoria. The Department’s PM began in 1988 as an industry-sponsored Chair and developed into full Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Project Management (MPM). It later expanded to include one-year certificate programmes and multiple short courses in project management.

In addition to training, academic staff participate in national and international initiatives aimed at strengthening project management as a recognised management discipline. These activities include competency framework development, standards contributions, and conference participation. Postgraduate research through Master’s and PhD dissertations advances specialised knowledge and contributes to the broader project management field.
