Virtual Public Seminar (13 August): Dr Chris Tyler - Science advice in National Parliaments: Research, practice and ways forwards

Posted on October 27, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has spiked public and political attention to the role of science and scientific evidence in decision-making, particularly on complex health and related socio-economic crises in Africa. At no time in Africa’s history has there been such a huge demand for science and scientific evidence for public policy. In some countries, science committees advise presidents, ministers and parliaments on complex health, medical, and socio-economic issues associated with the pandemic.

GSTM is collaborating with international research institutes around the world to study different science advisory mechanisms for complex crisis policy-making on COVID19 and other global challenges such as climate change. The study will seek to identify international practices of science advice and how different disciplines, particularly engineering sciences and professions, are involved in science advisory mechanisms.
