TuksGolf got involved in a unique project to encourage primary school kids to start playing golf.
It certainly has become a big success story.

After we have launched our pilot project in Tshwane we are excited were able to register 1250 primary school learners on our programme. An interesting statistic is that 44% of them are girls and 54% are from previously disadvantaged communities.

Johan Steyn (Head of Program: TuksGolf) said the rationale behind the whole project was because they at TuksGolf were getting worried about the declining numbers of people playing golf.

“One of the problems we identified was that the balance in golf system is wrong at the moment. We got a huge base of players who are performance driven in other words players who are already playing professionally or are working towards becoming professionals. The downside is that our numbers at grass root level are becoming smaller. That is never a healthy situation to be in. Any sport that wants to be successful should strive to have big foundation base of players because it leads to a bigger base of future stars.”

According to Steyn the reason TuksGolf decided to get involved with primary schools is because that is when most children get to decide in which sports they want to participate in as many sporting codes as possible and then later specialise at secondary school level.

“Nowadays it is difficult for parents to first find a golf club where their kids can play and then also to find time to drive them to and from the club. This often leads to younger children not getting the opportunity to play golf. Now a parent can just drop their child at school and find out whether the child is interested in playing golf before investing the time and money in the sport.

“The really nice thing about the project is that the players need no personal equipment. Everything is provided. There is also no need for the kids to go anywhere. They play at the school.  Once a child graduates from the program delivered at their school they can then choose to get involved with TuksGolf to further develop their golfing talent. TuksGolf has got established specialised service centres for juniors in Hatfield as well as Centurion.
