Urban Geography Honours Students Exhibit Creative Works at Javett Art Centre

Posted on June 11, 2024

On 31 May 2024, the GGY780 Urban Geography Honours students showcased and presented their creative pieces at the Javett Art Centre. These works vividly depicted complex urban challenges in South Africa. Each student selected a pressing urban issue and crafted a piece that delved into the nuances of the challenge. The topics ranged from housing provision and infrastructural deficits to service delivery, crime, and the quality of public spaces in South African cities.

Accompanying their creative pieces, the students prepared presentations and written reflections, offering deeper insights into the urban challenges they explored. This event is part of an ongoing collaboration between Dr. JJ Gregory and the Javett Art Centre's Living Classroom Initiative. Dr. Gregory has integrated art and creativity into the curriculum of the GGY780 module to enhance the understanding of complex urban phenomena in South Africa.

The themes covered and the challenges addressed in this module align with Sustainable Development Goal 11, also known as the Urban SDG, which aims to "make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable."
