Kayla Theron has been selected to participate in the University Partnership to Grow Administration and Education (UPGRADE) Internship program at Florida International University (FIU). The objectives of the internship are to draw on FIU curricula to build specific skills, link up with experts at FIU to improve research outcomes, and get exposure to international best practices in postgraduate research. It presents an opportunity for Kayla to learn new skills and prioritize the publication of her research in scientific journals with FIU staff co-authorship. In order to take up the internship, Kayla will travel to Miami, Florida for 4-6 weeks in September/October 2022, where she will be working on her postgraduate research project under the guidance of an assigned FIU faculty member.

Kayla received the SSAG Outstanding Honours Research Award for 2022, for her project entitled A street segment analysis of crime in Khayelitsha, South Africa. Her project was completed under the supervision of Professor Greg Breetzke, who is also her current MSc supervisor.
