On 14 October a number of students from GGY 361 (Environmental Geomorphology) attended a voluntary field trip to the Cullinan Cemetery, arranged by Dr. Natalie Haussmann. During the field trip, the various forms of tombstone weathering were inspected at the cemetery and Mr. Michael Loubser, who is currently doing his PhD on tombstone weathering, explained the different techniques used to study tombstone weathering, their advantages and shortcomings and tombstone research in general. The Cullinan Cemetery contains mostly marble and granite tombstones of varying ages, making it an ideal site to study the effects of weathering of cultural stone of different lithologies over time.
