The Centre for Environmental Studies (CFES) at the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology invites you to attend the Seminar on “Development of earth observation data cubes for monitoring land degradation processes in South Africa”. The seminar will be presented by Dr Insa Otte from the University of Würzburg, Germany. Dr Otte will be presenting some results from the SALDi project focusing on mapping land degradation in 6 sites across South Africa. The South African Land Degradation Monitor ( SALDi ) project was led by Dr Jussi Baade, from the University of Jena, Germany.

The seminar will be presented by Dr Insa Otte from the University of Würzburg, Germany.  Dr Otte will be presenting some results from the SALDi project focusing on mapping land degradation in 6 sites across South Africa.

Dr. Insa Otte is a research associate at the Department or Remote Sensing (LSFE) at the University of Würzburg since 2020. Her focus is on remote sensing, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions as well as monitoring climate and land use change. She is a member of various interdisciplinary research projects, the majority of them associated to the African continent: LANDSURF (BMBF), SALDi (BMBF), SDGs4Namibia (GIZ), AgriSens 4.0 DEMMIN (BMEL) and ESPE (StMGP). With partners from the DFG research unit FOR1246, she was involved in multidisciplinary research with a focus on tropical montane ecosystems in East Africa under global change. At the LSFE, she coordinated the development of various Data Cubes for the efficient and sustainable usage of remote sensing datasets even by non-remote sensing experts. She studied geography at the University of Marburg. In 2017, she earned her PhD at the University of Marburg for monitoring and analysing global climate change vs. local land use change and its impact on the atmospheric water input along an elevation and disturbance gradient at Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

The South African Land Degradation Monitor (SALDi) project was led by Dr Jussi Baade, from the University of Jena, Germany.
