NAS Women: It starts with you, one day at a time
Women's Month: Focus on Ms Fortune Masola

Q: Job title and in which department/research entity do you work?
A:
Senior Faculty Accountant

Q: What has been the highlight of your career?
A:
Having started in UP just over a decade ago, there have been many highlights. Working with highly qualified academics who panic at the sight of figures is a role I will always look back on with pride. It is an honour to manage and teach people who hold a higher qualification (in their fields) how to understand and manage their money. Some have come back to thank me as they now have a better understanding of managing their finances with the teaching from our meetings and conversations. I have found a culture of trust, empowerment and development in the University, which has helped me settle in this role of being a Senior Faculty Accountant. I am grateful that I have the flexibility to balance my work and spending quality time with my young family. I have been very privileged to work with many great clients and colleagues who have inspired me in so many ways and taught me a lot, particularly about leadership and resilience.

Q: What inspires you?
A:
People who leave their comfort zone to make a difference in another person's life inspires me. The feeling of accomplishment when I know I have given my all motivates me to get up every day to do and give to the best of my ability.

Q: What challenges have you experienced in your career?.
A:
Working with researchers who do not participate in administration and resistance adhering to the University Finance Policies and procedures.

Q: What message do you have for the youth of South Africa?
A:
Your choices have an impact on your family, work, community and your country. Always think before you speak, especially when in conflict. Every person that you meet knows something you don't know; learn from them. Let us all work together to save our planet earth - it starts with you, one day at a time.
