Walk Through Fungi

Posted on February 09, 2008

The tour started at the Nestlé Environmental Centre with an educational talk and was followed by a leisure walk through the garden. This presented a practical opportunity for the public to experience the “theory” that was presented to them in the earlier talk. That is of note is that Dr Gryzenhout also writes bimonthly features for The Gardener/ Die TuinierIn this publication, Dr Gryzenhout’s core function is to introduce fungi in layman terms and ordinary speech to the public at large. The next publication that will feature her contributions will be available as from March.

"I was first truly exposed to fungi during my pre-graduate Microbiology studies at the University of the Free State. What struck me most was the variety of incredibly interesting facts and the beautiful forms of fungi that was completely unknown to me up to then," says Dr Gryzenhout. She continues to assert that about five years ago, the very active branch of the Botanical Society of South Africa situated at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, approached her to give a talk on fungi. She has since given lectures and hosted fungal walks to several societies and at several places in South Africa.

"The enthusiasm and hunger for knowledge shown by these people are the reasons why I give such lectures and why I started an amateur e-mail list server for fungus enthusiasts.  Although these activities lie outside the scope of my research focus at the University of Pretoria, I believe that by promoting general mycology much needed research will be stimulated in this vastly underrepresented field of biology that impacts so widely on nature and our lives," concludes Dr Gryzenhout.
