UP Law’s hat-trick for again ranking Top 100 (90th) in the world – unequalled in Africa

Posted on November 07, 2019

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria (UP) announces with pride that it has ranked in the Top 100 of the World University Rankings 2020 by subject: Law (THE ranking) for the third time, a feat unequalled in South Africa and Africa. THE ranked UP Law 92nd in 2018, and 76th in 2019.

The THE rankings are based on key statistics, such as students (the number of full-time equivalent students at the university); student-to-staff ratio (the ratio of full-time equivalent students to the number of academic staff – those involved in teaching or research); international students (percentage of students originating from outside the country of the university); and female-to-male ratio (The ratio of female to male students at the university).

A proud former Dean André Boraine, whose second term ended October 2019, thanked law students, staff, alumni and friends of the Faculty in a letter of appreciation: ‘We are again in the Global Top 100, and the only African law faculty.   Please accept my sincere congratulations on this consistent good performance, which is the fruit of our academic labour and a collective effort by students, staff, alumni and friends of the Faculty!’

Since the announcement of the good news on social media yesterday, messages of congratulations have been streaming in from around the world, e.g. ‘Crème de la crème’ and ‘What a privilege to be able to state I obtained my law degrees from the best Law Faculty in Africa.’
