In honour of National Women's day, the Deanery hosted the Faculty’s women for a Women’s Day tea and cake celebration on Wednesday 8 August . The event provided the women of the Faculty an opportunity to take a short break from the office and engage with one another over some sweet treats. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Kevin Thomas opened the celebration with heartfelt words of gratitude towards the women in the Faculty, emphasising their roles as the leaders and core constituents of the Faculty of Humanities.
As leaders in their own right, our women have continued to break barriers and be agents of change in their respective departments and fields. Their commitment towards their work and the passion they have for the students is evident in the fruit of their labour. For this reason, Prof Thomas encouraged the women to truly find rest and positivity in the day and allow themselves to be celebrated for all their hard work. In closing, the Dean stressed the importance of dismantling prejudices and instead empowering women and offering the support needed for them to thrive in all aspects.
The Dean invited the Head of Department of Sociology for the Faculty, Professor Zitha Mokomane, who herself is an exemplary leader and has played an important role as a core member for this Faculty. Prof Mokomane brought attention to the indispensable role that marginalised women have played in shaping present South Africa. She asserted that, ‘Marginalised women have been instrumental in shaping the future of all women from different walks of life in our country’. Her words echo the contributions made by various women to overcome the barriers and challenges for the collective benefit of all.
While reflecting on the challenges women have had to overcome, Prof Zitha shared a heartfelt quote she resonates with which states that, “Instead of applauding women for being resilient, remove the systems which make them vulnerable.” This potent statement is a call to action. It calls for systemic change and equality which removes the expectation for our women to always be resilient but instead allows them to show up as their best and graceful selves. While much has been achieved to empower the everyday woman, we still have a long way to go.
The tea and cupcake celebration was more than just a celebratory gathering; it was a reminder of the community that exists within the Faculty and the importance of coming together to uplift and empower one another. The shared moments of conversation reinforced the Humanities commitment to creating a supportive and uplifting environment.
Happy Women’s Day to all the incredible women in our Faculty. Your leadership and commitment are invaluable, and we stand with you in the ongoing journey towards a more equitable future.
