Dear Humanities Colleagues

Despite the mid-week holiday, I am very grateful to see that a number of our colleagues have appeared on a variety of platforms, especially TV, this week. Here are this week’s highlights: 

 

 • Kyknet-Rapport Prizes for various categories were announced and UP took the honours for Book Reviewers of the year. Congratulations to Willie Burger who won review of the year in the fiction category and Hein Willemse who won the prize in the extended review category 

 

 

 • Siona O’Connell is being featured on the UP Home Page under Research Matters

 • “Heritage: Researcher Profile – Dr Siona O’Connell

 • “Heritage: Finding your way back home after being ‘uitgesmyt

 • “Heritage: How forced removals shaped ‘An Impossible Return

 •  Her latest opinion piece “Heritage Day must acknowledge the trauma of the dispossessed“ appeared in the Daily Maverick and on the UP Website, “Shameful to ignore effects of our ugly past” in the Pretoria News, “Heritage Day is not about braaing” on News24

 • She appeared on SmileFMeNCAMorning Live (SABC) to discuss her views on Heritage Day

 • Her film “Under the Dome: Cape Town’s Checkerboard” also appeared as part of this week’s IZIKO museum’s heritage week festival

 • Her latest film “In Gods Naam” will premiere on Sunday, 27 September 2020

 

 

 • Shakila Dada (CAAC) appeared on Newzroom Afrika to discuss dementia week, and together with Adele May(CAAC) published an opinion article on “Aid for dementia sufferers” in The Citizen, “Dementia can spark fear when you can’t remember those you live with” in The Sowetan, “Dealing with current stigmas of dementia” in the Cape Argus and “World Alzheimer’s Day: UP academics on how best to support dementia sufferers” on the Faculty’s website

 • Roland Henwood (Political Sciences) was interviewed on: SAFM discussing the situation in Belarus; on RSGcommenting on the agreements signed between UAE and Bahrain and Israel to normalise relations and bring changes and peace to the Middle East and on the implications of Barbados’ move to remove Queen Elizabeth as head of state; and, on Radio Pretoria talking about President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement to move to lockdown level 1

 • Noeleen Murray-Cooke (Archaeology & Anthropology) appeared on Newzroom Afrika talking about the debate around offensive statues

 • Alf Nilsen (Sociology) appeared on SAFM to discuss “India’s new Labour Laws, which are considered as ‘historic’”

 • LeadUP’s virtual chat celebrating Heritage Month with a LinkedIn event titled “Harnessing heritage: How can we leverage the power of our diversity?” featured Karen Harris (Historical & Heritage Studies) and Charlotte Sibanyoni (Ancient & Modern Languages & Cultures)

 • The Psyche Society has produced two new podcasts – an “Introduction to Mental Matters with Kimberley & Kopano” and an “Interview with Dr Nicolene Coetzee” 

 • Austin Pinkerton and Francois Gilles de Pelichy (Political Sciences) covered the recent panel discussion on “Decolonising universities in the time of COVID-19” on the UP website

 • Hannes Engelbrecht (Historical & Heritage Studies) and Kim Ngobeni (SAHRA)’s article describing “Conversations on Pandemic Practices in Heritage Management” on the Faculty’s website

 • David Kabwe (SRC President & Political Science) was featured on the M&G’s 200 Young South Africans and “UP SRC President included in JCI South Africa’s list of Ten Outstanding Young Persons for 2020” on the UP Website

 • Carlos Alberto Tirado Taipe (Ancient & Modern Languages and Cultures) and Johan Wassermann published the article “Being at the university is a retreat!’: a Black female student teacher’s views on the role of the university” in the International Journal of Lifelong Education

 

 • Christopher Changwe Nshimbi (Political Sciences) reviewed the book “Mobile Africa: Human Trafficking and the Digital Divide” in Research Africa Reviews
