Faculty Day: Highlighting Research, Innovation and Education

Posted on August 20, 2019

The Faculty of Health Sciences staged an informative Faculty Day event from 20 to 21 August in the Tswelopele Building under the theme ‘Research, innovation and education towards better health’. This is the platform for upcoming researchers to showcase their acquired skills and knowledge in the health fraternity to enhance health in various spheres of the community. During the opening, Prof Dianne Manning, Deputy Dean in Teaching and Learning, said: "Let’s celebrate what this faculty has achieved to date. This is a great platform to hear from younger, exciting, emerging voices and allow them to showcase their work that will be celebrated in the future."

Researchers, as well as post- and undergraduate students showcased their research findings through poster exhibitions, oral and poster presentations. PhD student Rebecca and master’s student in virology Rochelle attested to the positive impact of the event. "It was important to have direct interaction with other health professionals and to note the great contribution that we make in our community," said Rebecca. "We distribute our information pamphlets and exhibit our work to showcase the value of our contribution in the community by giving clarity where necessary in terms of, inter alia, rabies and other related diseases," concluded Rochelle.

According to Prof Mahmood Ally, Acting Deputy Dean in Research and Postgraduate Matters, this year’s Faculty Day had an immense impact. "This year’s event was different. The attendance was exceptionally good. The support from our Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Tawana Kupe and the entire University was inspirational," said Prof Ally.

Prof Ally concluded by echoing the sentiment expressed in Prof Manning’s opening speech: "We had a vast number of young researchers who exhibited quality work and this indicates that we have an excellent future." The event rallied behind the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
