Greenovate 2021

Posted on February 18, 2022

The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) was founded in 2007 and their Green Star SA rating tool was launched in 2009. The Green Star Office tool is the oldest of the GBCSA’s tools with the largest number of green building certifications and the updated v1.1 was launched in 2014.  The Office v1.1 tool (now called the New Built and Major Renovations tool) needed updating to keep abreast of new developments in the green building industry and this process has started in 2022.

A team of three BSc Hons QS students from 2021, Carmia Venter, Sanchia Lewis and Mckayla McMaster focused their mini-dissertation to assist this process of the GBCSA. Their study evaluated and described the level of difficulty of achieving the various credits in the Green Star tool, based on recent actual industry case study performance. Data from the GBCSA on 87 buildings certified between 2016-2019 was used. The study structure replicated a published Australian study from 2016. The UP team presented their study at the Greenovate forum in Sandton on November 2021. Some of the judges at the event also serve on the working committee of the GBCSA developing the New Built V2 tool. The UP team was asked to also present their findings at the first meeting of the GBCSA v2 working committee scheduled for 10 February 2022. This achievement proves that our students can make contributions recognized by industry.

Well done, Carmia, Sanchia and Mckayla!
