AMI_DST Light Metals Conference: 15 - 17 October 2014

The Light metals conference 2014 hosted by CSIR is an advanced materials initiative (AMI) by Department of Science and Technology (DST), SA.  The conference took place from 15 -17 October, 2014 at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge in Pilanesberg National Park. Papers presented at the conference dealt with R&D and technologies in areas such as primary metal production, metal powder processing, advanced casting processes, joining, high performance machining, forming, forging, physical metallurgy, simulation and modelling.

Kofi Annan (PhD student), whose study focuses on the development of constitutive equations for the prediction of austenite grain growth prior to and during hot rolling of microalloyed steels,  presented a paper entitled “ Austenite grain growth kinetics in low C-Mn and Ti-Nb-V microalloyed steels”. Kofi won the prize for the second best presentation at the conference. The award was based on the following criteria: clear scientific/industrial background, experimental/modelling approach, quality of results, analysis, interpretation and effective communication with the audience.

The Department is proud of its post graduate students such as Kofi and many others that actively promote the work they are doing at conferences here and abroad.
