Posted on August 27, 2020

Prof Nasima Carrim has been elected as exco member of the Society of Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA), chairing the newly created Diversity and Inclusion Interest Group.,  Her short-term vision is to give a voice to marginalised industrial and organisational psychologists (IOPS) within SIOPSA, as well as outside the society. Her long-term vision is to work closely with industry and in conjunction with institutions of higher education to attract, retain and promote the future generation of marginalised industrial psychologists.

Prof Carrim mentioned that “there are various challenges experienced due to COVID-19, one being delegate attendance at conferences. As an exco member I will also be involved in brainstorming sessions for conducting a virtual conference.”

Apart from her newly appointed role at SIOPSA, Prof Carrim is also part of a team of conveners for a future Gender, Work and Organisation (GDO) conference.  She is also a member of the Gender, Diversity and Organisation (GDO) Division of the Academy of Management (AOM) since 2010, the same division of which her colleague, Prof Jenny Hoobler, is the newly appointed Chair-elect (see article https://www.up.ac.za/human-resource-management/news/post_2915215-up-hr-expert-elected-to-lead-academy-of-managements-gender-and-diversity-division). She has been a Global Ambassador in the GDO Division for the past five years. She is currently a mentor for international mentees for the Division, where she provides guidance to new members on how to compile high impact articles.

Prof Carrim is not only involved with diversity matters within SIOPSA and AOM, she is in her second term as Management Sciences’ representative at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) Diversity and Inclusion Committee (https://www.up.ac.za/faculty-of-economic-and-management-sciences/article/2879462/diversity-and-inclusion-committee).  She has also worked closely with the operational Department of Human Resources at the University of Pretoria, with Mr Ronnie Nemaston, to engage with students around the implementation of employment equity legislation in organisations.

She has been a section editor for the South African Journal of Industrial Psychology for a few years. Recently, Prof Carrim co-edited with Dr Leon Moolman from North-West University the first diversity textbook in South Africa, entitled Managing diversity in the South African workplace (see https://www.up.ac.za/human-resource-management/news/post_2900776-textbook-co-edited-by-up-academic-reveals-slow-pace-of-transformation-in-south-african-workplace). The textbook attracted extensive media coverage and Prof Carrim was interviewed by both radio and television media houses, including SAFM and Newzroom Afrika, amongst others. Prof Carrim is an established researcher and successfully published several peer-review journal articles and scholarly book chapters, both nationally and internationally, covering topics related to diversity management (i.e. gender, culture, ethnicity, religion), identity work, intersectionality, minorities in the workplace as well as workplace gossip. She has successfully supervised several master’s degree students and is currently supervising several doctoral students related to her research foci.

Prof Carrim’s role as chair of SIOPSA’s Diversity and Inclusion Interest Group commenced in August 2020 for a one-year term.
