African Links – Building African Marine Mammal Research Capacity.
It is believed that there is considerable scope for the extension of certain of the large whale and other marine mammal research projects into Namibian and Mozambican and Angolan waters. The identification of partners and research institutions are still required for this initiative. Furthermore, South Africa, through the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) is the only African country involved in Antarctic research, which has regular access to the Southern Ocean. There is considerable scope for the use of such an access platform in introducing African cetacean biologists to Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecosystems research. Many of the migratory whale species utilise the waters of coastal sub-Saharan countries within their winter breeding migratory cycles and access to Southern Ocean waters would allow African scientists opportunities to study these species across their entire range.
