Biography Peter Coetzee obtained a BSc (cum laude) in 2002, a BSc Honours (cum laude) in 2003 and an MSc in Microbiology (cum laude) in 2005 from the University of Pretoria. He submitted his PhD thesis in Microbiology to the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Department of Production Animal Clinical Sciences, with a project entitled “Bluetongue virus: experimental studies on viral phenotype, reassortment and transplacental transmission” and is awaiting the result. He will undertake post doctoral studies in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, Pretoria, later during 2014. Research interests Some of his interests include the molecular biology, epidemiology and host-vector-pathogen interactions of emerging animal viruses. His current research focuses on the use of reverse genetics, reassortment and site-directed mutagenesis in order to investigate the molecular determinants that influence the phenotype of bluetongue virus in different in vitro and in vivo models. Research interests Currently a postdoc focusing on all aspects of horse-fly and mosquito (Insecta: Tabanidae; Culicidae) biology, systematics, evolution and role they play as vectors of disease-causing agents. My PhD research focused on using integrated methods to elucidate the systematics of Mantispidae (Insecta: Neuroptera). All aspects of evolutionary biology and systematics. I am knowledgeable in general Entomology with emphasised experience in collection management, field work, molecular data generation, experimental design and data analysis. Research project Systematics of medically and veterinary important arthropods and the role they play in pathogen transmission.
