Doctor Dorette Vermeulen
Dorette Vermeulen obtained her BMus degree and Performers Licentiate in piano while studying at the University of Stellenbosch. Continuing her postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria, she completed the BMus (Hons) (cum laude), MMus (cum laude) and DMus degrees. Her focal research area is community music involvement which forms an integral part of tertiary and post-graduate music education programmes in the Department of Music at the University of Pretoria where she is appointed as senior lecturer. She serves on several committees at the university including the Faculty Postgraduate committee, the Faculty Community Engagement committee and the Departmental Research committee. In the past six years, five doctoral and fourteen masters’ students completed their degrees under her supervision. She regularly acts as peer reviewer for accredited journals and has published several research articles. Additionally she co-authored a variety of music education resource books for teachers including two commissioned by the Western Cape Education Department. Dorette often serves as external examiner for Postgraduate studies at various South African universities and annually delivers papers at national and international conferences. She is the current Vice President of the Pan African Society for Musical Arts Education.
