Phuti Sepuru completed her Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Pretoria in 2011, majoring in Jazz Piano Performance, Music Education, and Music Technology. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Musicology in 2015 from the University of Pretoria, and is currently enrolled for a Doctorate in Musicology, with her current research focused on exploring elements of style in South African jazz pianists. She is employed as a Lecturer in World Music, General Music Studies, and Musicology at the University of Pretoria, and also serves as the jazz vocal accompanist.
In 2015 she was selected as the pianist for the esteemed Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band, and she was invited to join the prestigious Golden Key International Honour Society.
She has worked with artists such as Mabongi, Ebony, Candy Tsamandebele, Deborah Fraser, Basadi Women of Jazz, Ntombi Ngcobo, Abigail Kubeka, and Dorothy Masuku, and has performed internationally in Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Sweden, Denmark, Ruwanda, Zambia, Egypt, and New Zealand.
More recently, she was invited to play at the Winnie Mandela Tribute Concerts, playing for artists such as Tshepo Tshola, Judith Sephuma, Siphokazi, Zahara, Simhiwe Dana, Dr Tumi, Ringo Madlingozi and the Bala Brothers.
