#TuksRugby: UP-TuksRugby men’s sevens team third in Kenya Tournament

Posted on September 17, 2018

The UP-TuksRugby men’s sevens team put up a heroic effort to finish third in the National Christies Sevens Tournament in Kenya.

Andries Kruger (UP-Tuks coach) is of the opinion that with a bit of luck his team might have qualified to play the final, but unfortunately, in the semi-finals, the team made several unforced errors that led to them losing out.

Seen in the light that it has been nearly a year since the team competed in any tournament Kruger is happy with the outcome. It has been ideal preparation for the upcoming USSA Tournament that starts over the weekend in Margate.

Yesterday in the quarterfinals UP-Tuks outplayed Stanbic Mwamba to win 22-14. However, they lost in the semi-finals against the Kenya Harlequins. The score was 10-5.

According to Kruger, his players made things difficult for themselves with countless handling errors which enabled the Harlequins to be always on the attack.

“I think we defended for 11 of the 14 minutes we played. The positive we can take from the game is that the players proved they are fearless tacklers.”

In the playoff for third UP-Tuks dominated Strathmore Leos to win 31-7.

Lourens Pretorius (captain), Zandré Kruger and Dewald Naudé were outstanding for UP-Tuks during all three games.

Naudé was apparently dangerous every time he had the ball in hand. Apart from some quick sidesteps, he was able to time and again to accelerate just at the right moment to get out of a tackle.
