Mining Industry Study Centre

The School of Engineering has embarked on a growth strategy over the last decade in view of the shortage of engineering skills in South Africa. This resulted in a significant increase in engineering student numbers.

The Mining Industry Study Centre was inaugurated in 2013. The design utilises an additional 3000 m2 of preciously unused space at street level beneath the Engineering 1 Building. It supports the on-campus study needs of the Engineering students in a computer laboratory and also provides facilities for individual and group work.

Level 3:

  • 200 computers for individual work with the latest engineering related software for students to work.

  • 60 individual study cubicles (for students with own devices)

  • 30 CDIO discussion rooms with seven seats each. Students may book these discussion rooms for 2 hours at a time. Online bookings can be done at [email protected] The discussion rooms are fully equipped with network connections for laptops and each cubicle has its own LED screen to simplify group discussions and projects.

Level 4:

  • 312 individual study cubicles.

Hours:

  • Weekdays 07:00 - 21:00,

  • Saturdays: 08:00 - 12:00

The whole Mining Industry Centre has Wi-fi.
