What do we do at the SCU?

The SCU is a mental health partner to all our students. It is essential to stay focused on the important academic goals and to manage life stressors and unexpected events in an optimal way. We would like you to become a resilient student, ready to face life's challenges and manage your stress - which is sometimes unavoidable. There are many resources on this website to provided continuous mental health information and support. The development of personal and life skills enables students to develop holistically and empower them to be successful, well- rounded and resilient individuals and responsible citizens. Please visit our Self-help Materials for Students (podcasts) as well as out Mental Health Awareness page for more information.

We offer mental health programmes, workshops and webinars to enhance success and build your arsenal of skills. Please see Services offered for more information and how to register or request a mental health programme, workshop or webinar on various topics related to the management of Student Life.

We offer brief mental health consultation with one of our registered counsellors who will be to assist with brief mental health interventions.

We also offer telephone counselling by a UP careline registered counsellor when you call 0800 747 747. This service is delivered through our partners at the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

SCU is a HPCSA accredited training site for psychology interns and master's students. Some of our services are rendered by these psychologists-in-training, under the supervision of our senior registered psychologists.

Career counselling and assessment offered by the SCU can assist students to find the correct career path to match your interests, abilities and preferences.

The academic support rendered at the SCU ensures that the students make the correct career choices, approach their studies in an optimal way and are emotionally equipped to be academically successful.

For any course related enquiries or module related academic support, please get in touch with your Faculty Student Advisor (FSA).

Therapeutic and emotional support provided by SCU ensures that students are in the right frame of mind to strive for academic success. We strive to enhance the optimal psycho-social functioning of all our students.
