Ubuntu Exchange Programme: Fordham University and University of Pretoria

The Ubuntu Exchange Programme is located under the auspices of the Dean of Humanities and Prof Antoinette Lombard from the Department of Social Work & Criminology is the UP Director of the Programme. Students are at UP for the first semester and during this period they take two electives, mainly in the Faculties of Humanities and Economic and Business Management. In addition they take a core module on Poverty and Community Development which is presented by lecturers across four Faculties, namely Faculty of Humanities (Departments of Political Sciences; Social Work & Criminology and Sociology); Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (Department of Business Management); Faculty of Law (Human Rights Centre) and the Faculty of Education (Department of Educational Psychology).

A key component of the exchange programme is the students’ engagement in service learning. They engage in the NGO Future Families, where they join different projects in various communities. The other communities are Erasmus and Shoshanguve. The service learning is coordinated and supervised by Ms Leanne Jordaan in the Department of Social Work and Criminology.
