New Deputy Dean: Health Stakeholder Relations appointed in faculty of Health Sciences

The University of Pretoria (UP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Arthur Rantloane as Deputy Dean: Health Stakeholder Relations in the Faculty of Health Sciences, with effect from 1 November 2017.

Professor Rantloane is currently Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology in the Faculty of Health Sciences and, since February 2003, Chief Specialist in Anaesthesiology at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. He is a former academic head and a chief specialist in Anaesthesiology at the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) and the GaRankuwa Hospital (now Dr George Mukhari Hospital).

Professor Rantloane was registered as a specialist after having obtained the degrees MBChB and MMed (Anaes) from Medunsa. He has been supervising coursework master's students for more than fifteen years. During the same period he also acted as external master's research examiner for several universities. He has lectured widely locally and overseas, and currently serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for the South African Journal of Anaesthesia and Analgesia.     

Professor Rantloane has held various academic and professional leadership positions, including president of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists,  chairman of the Education and Credentials Committee and member of the Executive Committee of the College of Anaesthetists of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA), and chairman of the Standing Committee and a member of the Executive Committee of the Africa Regional Section of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).

His appointments on the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) include membership of the Postgraduate Education and Training Committee and the Committee of Preliminary Inquiry.

He has served for many years as a member of the Executive Committee of the School of Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Professor Rantloane is a recipient of the Nelson Mandela Gold Medallion and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital Service Excellence Award, and was a finalist in the medical category of the SADC region's Titans: Building Nations awards.
