Position, academic & professional qualifications

Koos Malan is professor of public law and holds the degrees BA (Pret) BA Hons (Political Science) (Pret) BIuris (Unisa) LLB (Unisa) LLD (Unisa). The title of his LLD thesis was “‘n Jurisprudensiële ontleding van die staatlike paradigma en van staatlike identiteit” (A jurisprudential analysis of the statist paradigm and statist identity).

Academic & professional experience

Before joining academia Koos Malan was a state prosecutor and thereafter a magistrate. From 1991 to 1999 he was a lecturer in practical legal training at Justice College, the training arm of the department of justice. He joined the former Vista University in 2000 as a senior lecturer and was promoted to associate professor in 2003. In 2004 Vista University (Mamelodi) was incorporated into the University of Pretoria and he became a member of the Department of Public Law. He was promoted to full professor from 1 January 2007.

Teaching activities

He teaches aspects of constitutional law, (PBL 200) for the LLB and Constitutional Law (CSL 801) for the coursework LLM degree in Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Hatfield campus of UP.

An academic monograph entitled Politocracy: an assessment of the coercive logic of the territorial state and ideas for an answer to it was published by Pretoria University Law Publishers 2012 (The book was also published in Afrikaans.)

• Manfred Nathan Bequest Award for one of the best UNISA LLB students in 1985.
