Service Commitments

Pathology

The Section has a huge diagnostic workload and provides a diagnostic service to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital at the Faculty as well as to all the other Departments. This service is also available to private clients including pharmaceutical companies.

The main purpose of the diagnostic service is to generate material for under- and post-graduate student training and it is not the intention to compete with the private sector for cases. This is well illustrated by the fact that IDEXX Vet Path, a private pathology laboratory, is renting space within the Pathology Complex. They also provide student training material to the Faculty.

Currently they are conducting approximately 1 300 post mortem examinations and 2 600 biopsies per annum.

Pharmacology and Toxicology

The Section renders a drug and poison information service to veterinarians and the general public. Enquiries are made by telephone or via e-mail. In addition, telephonic consultation and advice in both disciplines are given to practicing veterinarians.

Personnel of the Section also serve on the Veterinary Clinical Committee, a subcommittee of the Medicine Regulatory Authority, and fulfil an advisory role pertaining to drug registration.

Veterinary Public Health

Members of this Section are involved in specialist consultations, both on national and international level, on matters concerning veterinary public health. They also provide opinions on livestock welfare and HACCP assessments. Telephonic enquiries from the general public and the profession on food safety, slaughtering of animals and abattoirs are received and dealt with.

Field Investigations

This service involves going out into the field (cattle farms, game farms, etc) to investigate disease problems. Field investigations only occur by arrangement and the members of staff form part of a team of qualified investigators who goes out, with or without students.
