Having served fastidiously first under Prof. BJ Meyer and later Prof. MM Sathekge, she has been in the employment of the unit since 1988 and has become a stalwart in the department.

Described by colleagues as diligent, intuitive, and having a “never-say-die attitude” in the management of the imaging modality (nuclear scintigraphy), she is also well known as a soft, calm and caring individual, who strives to place the needs of the patient ahead of her own. Humility is another virtuous trait of this formidable lady that has solved many a problem in the department including organizing emergency supplies of isotopes, transport of patients and implementation of new protocols.

Says Marlene, “I am honored to have been afforded the opportunity to serve in the Department (of Nuclear Medicine) – in a field that has remained interesting and challenging throughout my stay. I have worked with wonderful colleagues and am flattered to have been nominated let alone received this award. It’s always nice to be recognized – once in a while – for doing work in a field you love.”

The award acknowledges service and performance excellence at the hospital on an annual basis.
