Music Communication modules

(MCS 701 and MCS 702)

The BMus (Hons) in Music Communication aims to equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in using music as a means to communication in a variety of contexts. One of the principal aims of the course is to enable musicians to work more creatively with groups in a large variety of social and cultural contexts. The course will encourage entrepreneurial skills related to setting up music groups within community and institutional contexts.

This course is offered annually. Applicants are selected every year for this part-time one-year course, which includes three compulsory block sessions per year.

The course leader is Dr Carol Lotter, a graduate of the University of Pretoria. Other tutors on the program include Dr Andeline dos Santos and Kobie Swart.

Masters in Music Therapy

The Department of Music launched its MMus (Music Therapy) programme in February
1999. This is the first music therapy training course in South Africa to be approved by
the Health Professionals Council of South Africa.

PLEASE NOTE: Since 2010, The MMus (Music Therapy) program has been offered in modular format.
This is in order to accommodate students who wish to do the course, but cannot relocate to Pretoria from various parts of South Africa. This enables students to complete their clinical internship, course work and dissertation from their home base. Three compulsory intensive 9 day block sessions are held each year for the two year period. Students are also required to travel to the University for examinations at the conclusion of each year of study. The modular programme does NOT equate to parttime study. It is a two year FULL-TIME academic program.
