Posted on October 25, 2018

On the 21st of October 2018, the University of Pretoria and the University of Witwatersrand competed in the annual intervarsity flight competition. The competition took place at Jomac, Johannesburg model aircraft club.

Aeronautical Engineering students from Pretoria and Wits University built their own model aircraft and competed in the High Speed Race.

Tuks Teams and B.Huyssen, the Aeronautics lecturer.

The University of Pretoria teams achieved the first three positions and clinched the overall best University certificate sponsored by the Aeronautical Society of South Africa.

The details………

The challenge was to conceptualize, design and build a radio controlled model aircraft that is capable of taking off under own power and flying over a short course as fast as possible. On the day of the competition there were a total of twelve participating teams: Tuks was represented by five teams consisting of 28 students, while seven teams were from the University of Witwatersrand.

The weather on the day was windy and cool. There was a lot of excitement in the air. Parents, girlfriends and lecturers were waiting for the magical time. The students completed their conceptual designs during the second semester and now they had to prove the ability of the aircraft… not only on paper but in the SKY! As can be seen from the pictures below, all the radio controlled aircrafts had a successful take off..

Verreaux made an astonishing aircraft that was amazingly fast, breaking the previous record of 27 seconds. All the spectators clapped their hands in the admiration of its superiority.

Once again Tuks demonstrated the ability to transform into reality what they study from their boring books.
