Background

The South African Mathematics Team Competition is a yearly event in which teams of mathematically talented high school learners compete against each other nationally.  The University of Pretoria usually enters two junior (Grades 8 and 9) teams, and two senior (Grades 10 to 12) teams, each consisting of ten learners, on behalf of the Gauteng North region.  A position in one of the teams is earned on the grounds of mathematics olympiad achievement, particularly in the South African Mathematics Olympiad, one of the activities of the South African Mathematics Foundation.

How it works

The competition consists of two papers, an individual paper and a team paper, each of one hour duration.  Learners first write the individual paper, consisting of fifteen multiple choice questions and counting out of 100 marks, on their own.  The scores of the ten learners on each team are then added to give the combined team score, out of 1000 marks, for the individual paper.

Next the team paper, which consists of ten difficult questions of 100 marks each, is written together as a team, where learners on the team may speak to each other and may work together on the problems.  The scores for the individual paper and team paper are then added together to give a final team score out of 2000 marks.

Around fifty teams from across Southern Africa participate in the competition each year.
