Posted on April 11, 2018

Prof Wolfgang Strasdas from the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development in Germany visited the honours class in Ecotourism at the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus on 20 March 2018. As an expert in the field, he presented a noteworthy lecture on corporate social responsibility certification schemes in ecotourism.

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences has a Memorandum of Cooperation with Eberswalde University and Prof Felicité Fairer-Wessels, lecturer in the Tourism Management Division in UP’s Department of Marketing Management, has acted as co-supervisor for Prof Strasdas’ students.

Prof Strasdas is currently on a research visit in Cape Town and has worked closely with Fairtrade South Africa, which aims to alleviate rural poverty and empower small-scale producers and disadvantaged workers primarily in Africa by creating marketing opportunities . As the Fairtrade-label is the leading sustainability stamp globally, Prof Fairer-Wessels made use of the opportunity to invite Prof Strasdas to share his expertise on global certification schemes and corporate social responsibility in the field of ecotourism with students in the honours module Responsible Ecotourism Management, where attention is paid to ecolabels and eco-certification of tourism products.
