UP Law students assist women inmates

Posted on September 20, 2018

In 2017 a number of students in the Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria in the course “Law and Community” (CLW), taught by Dr Tshepo Madlingozi and Dr Isolde de Villiers in the Department of Jurisprudence, worked with inmates in Kgosi Mamphuru 2 Correctional Centre.  This had very positive results.

Students, together with Ms Lethabo Mailula and other academic associates in the Department of Jurisprudence, collected law and other books for the women inmates.  These were handed over to them on Wednesday 12 September 2018.  Ms Dimpho Thema, who received her LLB degree at the recent graduation ceremony, represented the UP students.  Professor Johann van der Westhuizen, the Inspecting Judge of Correctional Services and former Constitutional Court Justice, addressed the meeting attended by all the female inmates, senior officials of the Department of Correctional Services and Ms Juliet Sehlangu of the Judicial Inspectorate.  A dance group rendered a touching performance at the event.
