International Museum Month a great success: connecting to new audiences

Posted on May 31, 2018

International Museum Day is an annual worldwide event celebrated nationally and internationally by professional members of the International Council on Museums (ICOM) on 18 May 2018. The Department of UP Arts and their UP Museums decided to expand this one-day event to celebrate the entire month of May, in order to engage with new audiences, particularly to encourage students and staff to visit and experience the beautiful offerings and diversity of collections that are within the museum galleries. To connect to wider audiences, UP Arts collaborated with the Department of Library Services, the Communication Management Division (within the Department of Business Management) and many other staff who enjoyed guided tours in the Museums. This initiative was a great success with more than 50 staff members visiting the Museums to celebrate International Museum Month. The UP Museums also joined forces with UP Campus Tours, who are fourth year Heritage and Tourism Honours students who run the campus tour agency. UP Campus Tours organised an amazing Scavenger Hunt to mark Friday the 18 May 2018 and over 113 students and staff participated in this fun event. The Museums further welcomed a wider diversity many of other visitors during the month of May, such as groups of school learners, international tourists and visiting scholars from across Faculties. The Department of UP Arts is pleased to share that we had a total of roughly 4360 visitors to the UP Museums over the month of May, with 561 visitors on International Museum Day alone.
